Administrative Philosophy Teaching Philosophy
The way we work is as important as the goals we reach.
My job as an administrator is to provide academic leadership and vision for my department, build bridges of understanding and a sense of community among internal and external constituents, garner support and sponsorship for new and ongoing department initiatives, establish communication networks between faculty, students and staff, and involve all stakeholders in meaningful participation and dialogue in decision making and planning. I approach this with a deep sense of respect for others and the diversity of their contributions, and a striving to make all participants feel valued and encouraged to do their best.
One of my chief responsibilities as an administrator is to facilitate the success and achievement of my faculty and support their professional and creative endeavors at all levels. As a life long learner myself who remains critically engaged in my own teaching, research and practice, I am committed to supporting their creative, intellectual and academic aims. I adhere to strict principles of fair decision-making, including a commitment to supporting institutionally maintained channels of dialogue, collaboration, and diversity.
A key to my leadership style is to maintain an open door policy and level headedness at all times. Crises may arise that require tough decisions, but embedded in these circumstances are always opportunities to learn and do a better job as administrators, faculty, students and staff. As situations arise, I listen to all perspectives, weigh options, and employ a blend of flexibility and resolve, including a willingness to reconsider my own position when circumstances warrant compromise or adjustment. At the same time, I understand that conviction is sometimes what is needed to see important procedures and initiatives through. Should I make a mistake, I accept responsibility.
I promote teamwork by delegating responsibility across a wide platform, empowering others to take charge of their own work and make important decisions that have real impact. I strive to establish new and dynamic partnerships among diverse constituents, and in so doing, increase cooperation, trust, pride, and promote a strong work ethic. A culture of mentorship, teamwork and good humor are qualities I model, encourage and strive to sustain, which go a long way toward contributing to an enjoyable and healthy workplace. All of these goals are not mutually exclusive but part of a larger whole which balances work, life, education, art, and a sense of community.
